DSA results are out. Got both a CO and a WL?
* CO = Confirmed Offer
* WL = Wait List

Key tip:
* If you prefer the WL school, put the WL as 1st choice and your CO as 2nd choice.
* Putting a WL before a CO does NOT weaken your CO offer.
* As long as you list your CO, it remains your secured fallback.

If all your results are WL only:
* Rank the schools in your true order of preference.
* Put the school you want most as 1st choice, then 2nd, then 3rd.
* This does not move you up any school’s waitlist — each school already has its own internal WL order.

Important reminder:
Rank schools in your true order of preference — not based on fear of “losing” a CO.

Does your child’s university ranking really matter?
After the US Top 20, the school-name advantage drops fast.
The difference between rank #30 and #100+ may matter far less than you think.

Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Auren Hoffman puts it bluntly: ranking only matters for the top 20. Beyond that, an expensive elite-signaling school holds almost no advantage over a strong state or public university — for jobs or prestige.

A thought-provoking view, not a fixed rule. Do you agree?

When should your child get a smartphone?
A recent Bloomberg article highlighted research suggesting age 13—at the earliest.

Interestingly, this is also consistent with what we heard from GATE parents whose children—many now GATE alumni—have grown into well-rounded young people. Many waited until after PSLE, when their children entered secondary school, before giving them a smartphone.

So, for now, GATE’s view is that 13 may be the “magic age” to start.
This is our current perspective, not a fixed rule.
What age do you think is right?

Which school did you guess?
Many parents assume it’s RI, HCI or ACS(I).
Here are a few interesting observation:
  • SJI (IB) currently has the highest estimated 6-year fees.
  • IB pathways generally cost more than traditional IP pathways.
  • Specialised Independent Schools (SOTA, Sports School, NUS High) have a different funding model from mainstream IP schools.
  • The fees shown are already heavily subsidised for Singapore Citizens. Comparable IB programmes at private international schools can cost 5–6 times more.

School fees are only one consideration.
The right-fit school depends on your child’s:
  • Academic strengths (STEM or humanities)
  • Learning style (exam-based or project-based)
  • University goals (local or overseas)
Need help finding the best secondary school pathway for your child?
Our founders offer School Matching & Education Pathway Consultations, helping families navigate IP, IB, Specialised Schools, DSA and other options based on each child’s profile.

Who really makes a “good school” good?

Is there really such a thing as a good school?
Maybe it’s just a bunch of good students gathered together…

So where do good students come from?
Apart from those who are naturally talented,
most are the result of parents’ education.

So here’s the question:
Do good schools make good students?
Or do good students make good schools?
Parents, what do you think?

The truth is: Higher Chinese does not count towards PSLE AL score.
Your child’s PSLE score is based on:
English + Mathematics + Science + Standard Chinese

So when does Higher Chinese matter?
It matters for SAP schools, such as HCI, NYGH, Catholic High, St Nicholas, River Valley High and Dunman High, it acts as a tiebreaker at the admission cut-off point.

Should your child take Higher Chinese?
✅ Yes, if they are strong in and enjoy Chinese.
❌ If Chinese is already a challenge, it’s often better to focus on excelling in Standard Chinese and the core PSLE subjects.

At GATE Education, we help P4 – P6 families make informed decisions on Chinese subject planning, PSLE strategy, DSA and secondary school selection.

The most misunderstood fact about COPs:
Scoring the cut-off point does NOT guarantee you a place.
It puts you in a ballot. To be safe, aim for COP–1.

The top 5 are unmovable.
RI, RGS, MGS, HCI and NYGH have held at AL 5–6M for 3 consecutive years.

Don’t overlook the AL 8–9 schools.
NJC, Victoria School, Dunman High and Temasek JC (Secondary) offer rigorous 6-year IP pathways and outstanding JC outcomes — these are excellent choices, not backup ones.

📈 Watch the trends.
– NJC: AL 7→8.
– Temasek JC : AL 9→8.
– Cedar Girls is volatile — last year’s COP is not a reliable guide.

No DSA is easy — But some are especially tough: unpredictable + low success rates.

Most unpredictable: RI & ACS Independent (IB)
Not purely score- or results-based
Strong candidates can miss out; surprises happen
Many non-academic factors affect outcomes

Most competitive (lowest success rate): NUS High
Open DSA (anyone can apply)
~2,000 applicants yearly → <200 offers
Tough Math & Science tests + camp selection

Which is the hardest to DSA into in your opinion — RI, ACS Independent, or NUS High?
