Who wins the DSA spot at RI?

Most parents would say the boy from the famous school. But the truth: it’s not that simple.
Top schools like RI today look beyond grades — overall profile, diversity, even which primary school you’re from can matter.

After 13+ years of guiding families, we know strategy is as important as achievement. Finding the right school is never an easy task — it takes insight, planning, and positioning.

“GEP” is changing from 2026 — what replaces it? Click to see how revamped “GEP” will work…

✅ P3 selection test is still the main anchor (with some holistic inputs).

Then schools will place students into:

✅ Top ~10% → High Ability Class (P4–P6) in EACH school
More students get stretched — without transferring schools.

✅ Top ~1% per subject (Math/Eng/Scie)→ Subject Talent (after-school pull-out)
Focused nurturing for exceptional ability (in-school or nearby designated school).

✅ Multiple entry points: P3, P4, P5
Missed it once? You can still be picked later.

No DSA is easy — But some are especially tough: unpredictable + low success rates.

Most unpredictable: RI & ACS Independent (IB)
Not purely score- or results-based
Strong candidates can miss out; surprises happen
Many non-academic factors affect outcomes

Most competitive (lowest success rate): NUS High
Open DSA (anyone can apply)
~2,000 applicants yearly → <200 offers
Tough Math & Science tests + camp selection

Which is the hardest to DSA into in your opinion — RI, ACS Independent, or NUS High?

Can children skip a level in Singapore? Yes, but it’s extremely rare.
Early admission to P1 or skipping a grade may be possible—but only with MOE’s approval after a formal assessment.
In over 10 years at GATE, we’ve only seen 2 successful early P1 admissions. It’s technically possible, but not encouraged or commonly facilitated by schools.
Why not?
Because the Singapore curriculum is built on depth, not speed. Children don’t race ahead to higher-level topics early—they explore each topic in greater detail and difficulty.

Gifted kids may feel P1–P4 is slow… but that changes fast. By P5 and P6, PSLE preparation kicks in. From secondary school onward, top school syllabuses are advanced, accelerated and even overwhelming. Many have talent development tracks that go deeper into subjects than expected.

So what can parents do?
1) Challenge high-ability children at home or through supplementary classes (especially in early years).
2) Focus on enrichment and depth, not just jumping grades.
3) By secondary school, most gifted kids will find their match—in both challenge and pace.

At GATE After School Programme (@Thomson CC, Bukit Timah Plaza, Katong V Mall, Dempsey Hill), we support high-ability learners with advanced materials in English, Math, and Science, beyond their school level.

Some parents worry when bright children can’t seem to “remember” basic things. But here’s what many don’t realise:
Memory is not just one thing.
There’s short-term (rote) memory and long-term (deep) memory.

Gifted kids may struggle with rote memory.
They dislike memorising random facts without understanding why.
But give them a concept they understand and love? They’ll remember complex ideas for years — because they store it in long-term memory.

So, if your child appears “forgetful,” it doesn’t mean they’re not smart. In fact, they could be gifted with exceptionally high IQ and deep reasoning skills.
Note: Some school systems rely heavily on short-term memory and rote learning — often a mismatch for gifted learners.

What they need instead:
✔️ Critical reasoning
✔️ Meaningful learning
✔️ Big-picture thinking
If this sounds like your child, don’t worry — just teach smarter, not harder.

IQ 200?! How is that even possible?
Turns out, there’s such a thing as Extended IQ!
At GATE, we’ve seen top student scores hit 160 using SB5 & WISC (WIPSI). But recently, one parent went beyond that.
Extended IQ norms had to be used—because his score exceeded the test’s standard limits.
(He graduated from RI and went on to MIT!)
Want to understand how IQ works—or test your child’s potential? Try a GATE test and book a review with our founders. https://www.gifted-school.com/gep-ha/
Let’s uncover what lies beyond the scale!

The numbers may surprise you:
• 10% of each Primary 6 cohort enter Integrated Programme (IP) schools, with PSLE cut-off scores typically ranging from AL4 to AL8, depending on the school.
• Approximately 50-60%of students are placed in the O-Level Express stream, which generally requires PSLE scores between AL9 and AL22.
• Over 42% of each cohort eventually secure places in local universities like NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, and SUSS.

With 35,000–45,000 students in each cohort, it’s evident:
Gaining admission to university is more attainable than entering an IP school.

Actually… it’s more common than you think. At GATE, we see this all the time—20% of our gifted students prefer nonfiction exclusively. And they’re not alone.

Research and educator observations suggest:
• Up to 30–40% of gifted children lean toward nonfiction.
• Among gifted boys, it may be as high as 50%.
• These children are naturally drawn to real-world facts, science, history, space, animals—anything that satisfies their deep curiosity.
• Studies (e.g., Reis & Renzulli, Gifted Child Quarterly) show gifted learners seek accuracy, depth, and complexity—which nonfiction delivers better than many fictional stories.

That’s why our GATE English programme (K1–P6) explores all genres—from current affairs and science articles to history and political science. We embed real-world content from sources like National Geographic, Reader’s Digest, and more.
